Seroja

Seroja is now 5.5 years old and weighs 15kg. In order to boost her confidence, she was recently moved to the young orangutan group in the social complexes.

Here, Seroja has already begun to act as a role model for the younger orangutans as she prepares to move to forest school! This move has been positive both for Seroja, who needed a chance to come out of her shy character, and the infants, who now can learn from an experienced orangutan.

Seroja is generally a very peaceful and easy-going orangutan. Whenever others in her group fight, she stays out of it, but when it comes to play, Seroja is always involved! She loves to chase, tickle, and climb with all of her friends. Her best friends are Upin and Bintang.

Seroja loves to play with hessian sacks, which sometimes have food hidden inside, and are also great for hiding under! Another one of Seroja’s favorite activities is working to shake peanuts and other treats out of balls, which helps her to learn necessary foraging behaviors.

Seroja’s new favorite food is recently introduced protein pellets, which play an important role in ensuring proper nutrition and are formulated from vegetables and special protein powder. Additionally, Seroja loves to eat mangoes, and has started breaking up the mango seed, which is messy, but fun!

Seroja has already developed many of the skills that she’ll need to live as a wild orangutan in the forest. She is an expert at making a comfortable nest to sleep in each night, and she is one of the best orangutans in her group at solving puzzle box enrichment. Seroja’s gentle and calm nature probably plays a role in the amount of patience she has when problem-solving, which also helps her to get the best foods! The progress that Seroja has made means that she is ready to enter jungle school this year at the Jantho Reintroduction Station in Aceh.
